PGT Window Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install PGT-compatible window replacement parts throughout Los Angeles, with typical installed pricing running $240 to $680 per window depending on the specific PGT series and failed component. Most Los Angeles owners discover a PGT part has failed when the sash suddenly won’t lock, the window won’t hold position, or water appears along the interior sill after a rain event. You’ll usually feel it before you see it: a crank handle that spins without resistance or a slider that scrapes against its track. Here’s how to identify what failed, what it should cost, and whether you can handle it yourself.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT’s catalog breaks into three families we regularly service in Los Angeles: the SGD series (single-hung and double-hung), the 5500/7700 impact-rated lines common in hillside and canyon neighborhoods, and the WinGuard series specified where windborne debris protection matters. The part you need depends on which family you have, and here’s the compatibility gotcha we see weekly: PGT changed its balance shoe design in 2018, so a balance shoe from a 2017 SGD570 will not seat correctly in a 2019 SGD570 even though the windows look identical. The label matters. Look for the AAMA sticker on the frame head or the etched number in the lower corner of the glass – that tells us the series and the manufacturing date. We specify OEM PGT parts when the window is under warranty or when trim match matters, but for older units past warranty, quality aftermarket equivalents from Caldwell and Amesbury usually cost 30 to 40 percent less and carry the same functional lifespan. We carry both, and we tell you which one your opening actually needs rather than defaulting to the most expensive line item.
Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

- Upper sash won’t stay raised. The balance shoe or spiral balance has lost tension. On PGT double-hungs in Los Angeles, the nylon shoe on the SGD line is typically the first component to degrade, usually around years 8 to 12 depending on how often the window is opened.
- Crank handle spins with no resistance. The operator gear has stripped inside the casement housing. This is common on PGT casement windows that face west in Los Angeles – the afternoon sun through the glass accelerates lubricant breakdown in the gear set.
- Rollers scrape or bind on a slider. PGT slider rollers use a stainless steel wheel on a nylon bracket, and the bracket is the failure point. Once the nylon cracks, the wheel cants and drags. You’ll hear it before you see it.
- Water or daylight visible at the meeting rail. The compression weatherstrip has flattened past recovery. On PGT SGD and WinGuard lines, the weatherstrip is a foam-in-vinyl profile that loses resilience in Los Angeles’s dry heat cycles, usually within five to seven years on south-facing elevations.
- Lock cam won’t engage or engages halfway. The keeper has bent or worn. We also see this after house settling shifts the frame out of square, which changes the alignment enough that the cam misses the keeper entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect to pay between $240 and $680 per window for PGT-compatible part replacement, installed. The range is driven by the part itself and the accessibility of the opening:
- Balance shoe or spiral balance replacement: $240 to $320 per window
- Casement operator and crank set: $280 to $390 per window
- Slider roller assembly replacement: $270 to $375 per window
- Weatherstrip and seal replacement: $180 to $260 per window
- Full sash rebuild (multiple components, glazing reset): $450 to $680 per window
Every price we write includes the part, the labor, the trip, and the written warranty on our work. You receive a line-item quote before any work starts, and the invoice matches that document. If a window needs two parts instead of one, we’ll tell you before we touch it and the price won’t move without your sign-off. That’s Clause 5 of the Haven Standard we’ve run on since 2012, and it applies whether the job is one balance shoe or a full house of thirty windows.
DIY or Call Us?

There are two things worth checking yourself: the serial number on the frame label so you know your series and year, and whether the fog between your glass panes is condensation (wipe it from the outside) or a failed seal (it doesn’t wipe away). Seal failure isn’t a part replacement – it’s a glass pack replacement, and that’s a separate scope. Beyond identification, PGT window replacement work goes wrong fast for DIYers because the balance systems are under spring tension. On a double-hung SGD, removing the sash incorrectly releases that tension and the shoe and spring can eject with enough force to take out a finger or a pane. We’d rather you call us at (509) 265-6387 and let our technicians handle the tension while you keep the photos and the measured survey for your records. The diagnostic visit is straightforward, and the written quote you receive is yours to keep whether you book the work or not.
FAQs
In Los Angeles’s climate, plan on 8 to 12 years for moving PGT parts like balance shoes, rollers, and casement operators. Sun exposure on south and west elevations accelerates nylon and lubricant breakdown, so those windows trend toward the shorter end. Weatherstripping and seals typically need attention every 5 to 7 years. Call (509) 265-6387 if you’re unsure whether your part is at end-of-life.
Most PGT moving parts are replacement items by design – the balance shoe, roller bracket, and operator gear are not serviceable in place. What can be adjusted rather than replaced is alignment: a sash that’s off-square can sometimes be corrected by adjusting the shoe position or keeper placement rather than swapping the lock. We’ll tell you which one applies to your window before quoting.
A single part replacement like a balance shoe or roller takes 30 to 45 minutes once the technician is at the window. A full sash rebuild runs about two hours. Most Los Angeles appointments are scheduled in a half-day window, and our technicians arrive with the part already matched to your series from the measurements and label information you provide.
We stock common PGT replacement parts for the SGD, 5500/7700, and WinGuard lines, including balance shoes, spiral balances, casement operators, roller assemblies, and weatherstrip profiles. If your opening needs something we don’t carry, we also source for the other manufacturer lines we service – CGI, CWS, and ES Windows – so you’re not waiting on a specialty order without a date attached.
