PGT Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
PGT door installation in Los Angeles typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing rollers, hinges, a full hinge kit, or the weatherstripping assembly. We stock PGT-compatible hardware on our trucks and can usually complete the swap in one visit. Most owners discover a failing PGT door part the way you just did: the door drags against the frame, a screw has stripped out of the hinge, or a seal that used to close tight now lets sun and noise through.
Los Angeles is hard on sliding doors. The combination of dry air, fine dust, and daily thermal cycling (especially on west-facing walls) accelerates wear on rollers and seals faster than coastal humidity ever does. We see PGT doors in Silver Lake, Echo Park, and the San Fernando Valley fail at the same age for the same reasons: the factory lubricant dries out, the nylon roller tires flatten into ovals, and the vinyl weatherstripping takes a set from the heat. If you’re looking for PGT door installation in Los Angeles rather than a generic door shop, you’re already ahead: these doors have model-specific hardware that doesn’t always cross over.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We service PGT sliding glass doors, hinged terrace doors, and the WinGuard impact-rated lines most common in Los Angeles County. The two families you’ll want to identify before calling us: PGT 5500/7700 series sliding doors and PGT WinGuard impact doors. Each uses different roller bodies and hinge geometries.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of owners: PGT changed roller housing dimensions between manufacturing years, even within the same series. A 2018 PGT 5500 may take a 1-1/4″ tandem roller, while a 2022 build takes a 1-1/2″ body. The stamp on the edge of the door panel tells us the series, but the glass size and the interior of the bottom frame channel tell us the roller spec. We measure both before ordering or pulling a part off the truck.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: PGT’s factory rollers and keepers are well made, but the aftermarket replacements we carry (from Prime-Line and CRL) are dimensionally identical and often come with sealed bearings that outlast the originals in Los Angeles dust. We’ll tell you which one makes sense and show you the part before we install it. We’re an independent Los Angeles installer, not a PGT dealer, which means we stock by fitment, not by brand loyalty. We also carry hardware for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors for the same reason.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

- The door has to be lifted to slide. This is the classic flattened roller. The nylon tire has gone oval or the bearing is seized. In Los Angeles, the dust works its way into the bearing race and turns lubricant into paste within three to five years.
- The door scrapes or chatters in the track. You’re hearing metal-on-metal. Either the roller has collapsed entirely and the aluminum frame is riding the track, or the track has worn a groove that catches the roller. Continuing to run it makes both worse.
- You can see daylight or feel air at the meeting stile. The interlock weatherstripping has compressed or torn. This is the seal where the two door panels meet, and once it fails, you lose the energy performance and the noise attenuation at the same time.
- One corner of the door sags visibly. On hinged PGT doors, this usually means a hinge leaf has pulled loose from the frame or the jamb screws have stripped. On sliders, it means a roller axle is bent.
- The door is hard to lock or the latch won’t engage fully. The door has settled out of square, which shifts the strike plate alignment. This is a symptom, not the problem; adjusting the lock without fixing the roller or hinge is a temporary fix at best.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the price range for PGT door installation in Los Angeles, in writing, before anyone shows up:
- Roller replacement (per panel): $180 to $360 installed, including parts.
- Hinge replacement (per hinge, hinged doors): $95 to $180 installed.
- Full hinge kit + realignment: $350 to $650 installed.
- Weatherstripping replacement (interlock, header, and sill): $150 to $420 installed.
- Track repair or replacement (roller track): $300 to $700 installed.
The spread comes down to panel weight (WinGuard panels are heavier and take a second set of hands), access (second-floor doors take more rigging), and whether the roller housing needs to be milled to accept an updated body. That’s the “measured survey” part of the Haven Standard: we document the opening before we quote, not after. Every job gets a written price, and the written price is the price. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. We also include a documented photo record of the completed installation, same as we have on all 18,000+ openings we’ve touched since 2012.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things without touching a tool. Look at the bottom edge of the door panel for a model stamp. Look at the track for visible wear grooves. Check whether the door lifts when you grab the handle and pull upward. That tells you a lot and it’s useful information when you call us at (509) 265-6387.
What we don’t advise is pulling a PGT slider panel yourself. These panels weigh 150 to 300 pounds, and once they clear the track, there’s no good way to hold them safely without a panel dolly and a second set of hands. The tension in the roller springs can surprise you, and a dropped panel is a broken glass situation, not a scratch. For hinged doors, a stripped hinge screw can be re-tapped, but the tap has to be sized to the jamb, not the screw. Get it wrong and you’ve turned a $95 hinge job into a jamb repair. We’d rather you call us and tell us what you’re seeing. We’ll give you a straight answer about whether it’s worth a visit.
FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions, PGT rollers typically last 7 to 12 years before the bearing wears or the tire flats. Weatherstripping usually needs replacement at 5 to 8 years. WinGuard doors and west-facing installations tend to sit at the shorter end of those ranges because of the heat load and dust. Call (509) 265-6387 and we’ll tell you whether yours is at the end of its service life based on what you describe.
Rarely. If the bearing is just dry, a cleaning and a re-lube can buy you time. But once the tire has gone oval or the bearing is seized, there’s no repair that lasts. The part is cheap relative to the damage a dragging door does to the track. We’ll show you the old part when we take it out, which is part of the documented record we leave on every job. Call us for an honest read at (509) 265-6387.
Rolller and weatherstripping swaps on a PGT door usually take 90 minutes to 3 hours on site, depending on how many panels are involved and whether the track has damage that needs attention. Most jobs in Los Angeles are done in a single visit. We arrive with the parts, the tools, and a written scope, and we leave with the door running square.
We stock PGT-compatible rollers, hings, keepers, and weatherstripping for the most common 5500, 7700, and WinGuard configurations on our trucks. If your door takes an uncommon variant, we can usually source it within a few business days. Either way, you’ll know before we start. Call (509) 265-6387 with your model code and we’ll confirm what’s available.
