Window Installation Stopped Working

If your window stopped opening, closing, locking, or staying put, the cause is almost always one of four things: a failed balance system, a worn-out hardware component, a frame that has shifted with the house, or a seal failure that has made the sash swell. Most of these are fixable without replacing the entire window — but a proper diagnosis tells you which path you’re on before anyone picks up a tool.

Call (509) 265-6387

A window that “stopped working” covers a wide range of symptoms. It might mean the sash drops when you let go, cranks that turn without moving anything, a lock that no longer aligns, or a sash so swollen with moisture that it takes two hands and a prayer to budge. Each symptom points to a different component, and each component has a different repair path. What they share: none of them get better on their own, and most of them get meaningfully worse with a season or two of being forced.

Why It Happens

1. The Balance System Has Failed

Double-hung windows rely on a balance mechanism — either a spiral rod inside the frame channel or a block-and-tackle system — to hold the sash at whatever height you set it. When that balance fails, the sash either falls freely when you let go or resists being moved at all. You can usually spot this by opening the window a few inches and releasing it: if it drops immediately, one or both balances are gone. A good balance holds the sash steady mid-travel with no effort from you.

2. Hardware Wear on Casements and Awnings

Casement and awning windows are operated by a crank mechanism connected to a multi-point locking arm. The crank gear wears down over years of use, and the arm’s pivot points can strip, seize, or corrode — especially in climates with high humidity or salt air. The tell here is a crank that spins freely without moving the sash, or a sash that won’t pull flush against the frame when you close it. Sometimes the handle itself shears off the gear; sometimes the gear inside the operator housing has simply worn past its tolerances.

3. Frame Shift from Structural Movement

Houses move. Foundations settle, framing dries out, headers deflect slightly over decades. When that happens, the rough opening that once squared up perfectly with your window frame may have racked a fraction of an inch in one direction. That fraction is enough to bind a sash that used to glide, pull a lock strike out of alignment, or prevent a sash from fully closing. Look at the gap around your sash from the inside: if it’s noticeably wider on one side than the other, or if the corners show paint stress lines you don’t remember seeing before, frame shift is likely.

4. Moisture Swelling or Seal Failure

Wood sashes absorb moisture seasonally, and even some composite frames expand enough to bind against their stops when humidity spikes. A sash that works fine in winter and sticks every summer is almost certainly moisture swelling. Seal failure — when the gas fill between panes escapes — shows up as fogging, condensation between the panes, or a faint milky film you can’t wipe away. That fogging won’t clear, and it’s a signal that the insulated glass unit (IGU) needs replacement rather than a simple hardware fix.

What to Do Right Now

What to Do Right Now
  • Stop forcing it. A sash that’s binding, dropping, or sticking can be damaged further — and can damage the frame — if you keep applying force. Note what it does and stop using that window until it’s looked at.
  • Photograph the symptom as you see it now. A picture of the sash gap, the failed hardware, or the fogged pane gives a technician a starting point before they arrive and creates a before-record that matches the documented photo record every Sightline visit produces.
  • Check whether the problem is on one sash or both. On a double-hung, if only the bottom sash drops but the top holds, the issue is isolated to that sash’s balance pair. This narrows the diagnosis significantly.
  • Look at the perimeter gap from inside. With the window closed, hold a piece of paper near the sash edge on a windy day. If it moves, your sash isn’t sealing — which tells a technician whether they’re dealing with a hardware problem or a frame alignment problem.
  • Do not attempt to adjust balance springs or tension rods yourself. Window balances — particularly block-and-tackle and spiral-rod systems — are under constant spring tension. Releasing that tension without the right tools can cause the component to snap back hard and cause injury. Leave that part to the technician.

How We Fix It

When your local Sightline Windows & Doors team arrives, the first thing they do is a documented inspection — what we call the Evidence step under the Haven Standard. They check the balance type, test the hardware, measure the sash-to-frame gaps, and read the seal condition. What they find is photographed before any repair starts.

From there, the path splits cleanly. A balance replacement is typically a same-visit repair once the technician has confirmed the balance type and has the right part on the truck. Hardware replacement on a casement or awning — operator, crank, locking arm — follows the same logic. Frame shift or IGU replacement may require a follow-up visit for ordering, but the written price covers that scope before anything moves forward.

The services that cover this work are Window Replacement and Window Installation, depending on whether the unit needs a component fix or a full new window. Either way, the quote is written before any work starts — that’s Haven Clause 1 and it hasn’t changed since 2012. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair we make: if it’s not done right, we make it right.
